5 Tips for Allergies With Hair/Beauty Chemicals

Some people never have any problems with hair or beauty products and then others do.  Over the counter/salon products can be more harsh then natural products in a health food store or vise a versa. Whichever the case may be, this is the time you need to do your homework and beware of what you are putting on your body or hair. Hair and skin is one thing that will make you feel good as you look in the mirror and go through life. This is the time when you need to know what’s right for you,  before you treat yourself to relaxing times at your salon and invest in your looks.
Here are some guidelines:
Lawrence’s 5 Tips
  1. Always do a patch test whenever you are using a new chemical on the human body, for you do not know how it may react with your personal chemical makeup.  Allergic reactions may occur at these times, an excess of sensitivity can cause a rash, swelling of skin, ulceration of skin, uncontrollable internal itching and even feeling as thou you are being bitten by many bugs on the scalp and many more. These reactions can come out of nowhere even if you have used these chemicals for years. This can be because of change of product ingredients, new medications, change in your personal hormone system, environmental factors and many more, to many to list hear.
  2. If you experience a chemical reaction stop what you are using and flush with water and seek the appropriate help immediately
  3. You don’t have to stop coloring your hair or using beauty products, if you have a reaction to these types of products.  There are other options.  You can also use natural colors and beauty products from health food stores and bring them into you salon for application.  However, some of these products and colors are not as successful in covering problematic skin or grey in your hair.  There is a range of options of products to choose from if you take the time to seek them out.  Talk to your hairdresser, health food store representative or even your doctor and see what’s best for you.
  4. If you do have a reaction to color or a beauty product get tested right away by your doctor to what it is you are allergic to in the chemicals in a salon so you can find alternatives.
  5. Eat right and stay healthy and fit. Drink plenty of water to hydrate the human body.  Your hair and skin needs all the nourishment it can get during this time.

Looking your best is important in life.  So take the best care of yourself now.  And always consult with your doctor as to what salon services and products s/he may feel will be the safest for you.

5 Tips - Myth or Old Wives Tale About Menstrual Cycle and Pregnancy With Hair Chemicals

I am asked all the time is this a myth or an old wives tale, can I dye or permanent relax/wave my hair when I am on my menstrual cycle or pregnant?

I am not a doctor but for over 25 years of experience being a hairdresser I have seen many problems that need to be noted. During menstruation and pregnancies your hormones are sky high because your body is designed to protect it self. Your body does this by excreting extra oils and hormones through out the glandular system especially in the scalp.  Your skin and scalp can become more sensitive during this time and even the tiniest amount of pain can seem 100 times worse, when using chemicals that can irritate the human body. So use caution when using these chemicals.

Hair color, hair relaxers and perms, have chemicals that can disrupt this hormonal excretion and can cause irritation to the scalp and body during these times.  Sometimes the chemical may not work, turn out wrong or you may have an allergic reaction to them from my professional experience.

Not everyone experiences these reactions to these chemicals. But one common problem is an allergic reaction that may occur at these times. Some of these reactions I have seen over the years behind the chair is an excess of sensitivity that can cause a rash, swelling of skin, ulceration of skin, uncontrollable internal itching and even feeling as thou you are being bitten by many bugs on the scalp and many more. These reactions can come out of nowhere even if you have used these chemicals for years. This can be because of change of product ingredients, new medications, change in your personal hormone system, environmental factors and many more, to many to list hear.

If you ever have a reaction seek medical help and disregard using the products. Make sure you do a patch test before any chemical you use on the human body, for you do not know how it may react with your personal chemical makeup. If this does happen to you, ask your doctors, hairdressers for other alternatives. It is important to speak up and learn about your own body if a problem may arise.

  3. If you experience a chemical reaction or even hair loss, during or after, don’t freak out. It may be normal for you.  You may want to increase your proteins, and eat foods enriched with higher omega fats found in cold-water fish, such as salmon.  Check with your physician regarding dietary restrictions due to mercury.
  4. You don’t have to stop coloring your hair when you are on your menstrual cycle or pregnant.  There are other options. Get your hair colored in a foil method so that the color is not sitting on your scalp.  You can also use natural colors from health food stores and bring them into you salon for application.  However, some of these colors are not as successful in covering grey.  There is a range of options of colors to choose from.  Talk to your hairdresser and see what’s best for you.
