I am asked all the time is this a myth or an old wives tale, can I dye or permanent relax/wave my hair when I am on my menstrual cycle or pregnant?
I am not a doctor but for over 25 years of experience being a hairdresser I have seen many problems that need to be noted. During menstruation and pregnancies your hormones are sky high because your body is designed to protect it self. Your body does this by excreting extra oils and hormones through out the glandular system especially in the scalp. Your skin and scalp can become more sensitive during this time and even the tiniest amount of pain can seem 100 times worse, when using chemicals that can irritate the human body. So use caution when using these chemicals.
Hair color, hair relaxers and perms, have chemicals that can disrupt this hormonal excretion and can cause irritation to the scalp and body during these times. Sometimes the chemical may not work, turn out wrong or you may have an allergic reaction to them from my professional experience.
Not everyone experiences these reactions to these chemicals. But one common problem is an allergic reaction that may occur at these times. Some of these reactions I have seen over the years behind the chair is an excess of sensitivity that can cause a rash, swelling of skin, ulceration of skin, uncontrollable internal itching and even feeling as thou you are being bitten by many bugs on the scalp and many more. These reactions can come out of nowhere even if you have used these chemicals for years. This can be because of change of product ingredients, new medications, change in your personal hormone system, environmental factors and many more, to many to list hear.
If you ever have a reaction seek medical help and disregard using the products. Make sure you do a patch test before any chemical you use on the human body, for you do not know how it may react with your personal chemical makeup. If this does happen to you, ask your doctors, hairdressers for other alternatives. It is important to speak up and learn about your own body if a problem may arise.
